Why You Should Pay Attention to Moving Violations

Did you recently get a ticket for a moving violation? It happens! There are a number of different offenses that fall into this category, some of which include speeding, texting while driving, running a stop sign, and driving under the influence (DUI). Essentially, this kind of violation happens while your car is moving − it’s exactly how it sounds. Understandably, you may be wondering if this kind of ticket will affect the price of your car insurance premium.

The answer is: It depends. If the moving violation has been cleared from your record, it usually isn’t a factor under consideration. But if it hasn’t yet been taken off your driving record, it may affect your car insurance quote.

Moving violations are considered more severe than non-moving violations, and as result, they’re often more costly, overall. Here’s what you need to know.

What happens if you receive a moving violation?

It’s important to take a moving violation seriously. When you’re first pulled over, the police officer will ask for your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance. You might be nervous, so remember to take a breath and stay calm. Listen to the officer and answer any questions he or she may have.

Next, the citation will be written up with all necessary information, including your car information, details on the when and where, a verbal description of the offense, and your vehicle’s license plate number. The officer will ask you to sign the ticket.

A few weeks later, you’ll receive a follow-up letter in the mail reminding you to pay the fine or, if you choose, contest the offense. Even if you receive the traffic ticket out of your home state, you’ll still be responsible for handling it.

Why should you try to avoid getting one?

Of course, it’s best to avoid getting a speeding ticket or other type of moving violation in the first place. It will save you a whole lot of trouble and a major headache in the long run. Penalties vary among states, but oftentimes you may be required to go to traffic school in order to remove points from your driving record.

The consequences of a moving violation can be serious. Depending on the type of violation, you may be subject to losing your driver’s license, heavy fines, and even arrest. Not to mention, of course, the longer your moving violation stays on your record, the more likely your car insurance premium could go up or your new insurance quote could be much higher.

Following safe driving practices keeps you and others safe on the road. It also saves you major expenses down the line. Drivers who go long periods of time without accidents, moving violations or other occurrences can often see their auto insurance rates decrease. A lower premium is what we’re all dreaming of, right?

Just one moving violation, or several?

There’s definitely a difference, and it’s clear: If you’ve had several moving violations, it will likely increase your car insurance premium. Especially if more than one moving violation occurs in a short period of time, you’ll probably see an increase in your payment. Repeat offenses tend to show insurance companies that your risk as a driver is much higher, which will be reflected in the cost of your premium.

However, if it’s your first ticket ever or first moving violation in a long time, it might have very little impact on your insurance. Additionally, insurance companies handle moving violations differently. Some look at moving violations two years prior, while others go back up to three years. Some insurance companies even offer accident forgiveness for your first accident within a certain period of time, which can be a potential option for drivers who are generally safe on the road.

What if you’re an experienced or new driver?

As an experienced driver, your car insurance may take a more forgiving approach to your moving violation. A driver with no prior history of violations may not be affected as much by their first moving violation. An offense like a DUI is much more serious, however, and will likely affect your premium for many years to come.

For new drivers, you may see an immediate increase in your car premium, even if it’s your first violation. Unfortunately, since newer drivers don’t have a long track record and existing relationship with insurers, it can be difficult to avoid higher premiums if the offense happens early on in your driving history.

Your car insurance rate is usually calculated based on your perceived level of risk as a driver. A traffic ticket may happen once in a few years to most of us, but repeat offenses can pose a risk to yourself and others on the road. Keep our roads safe by following careful driving practices, which will also save you money in the long run.

Like most factors that determine the price of your insurance, how violations are rated varies from company to company, so be sure to shop around to get the best price.
